The Foundation Of Anger

Dear Fellow Travelers,

Just for today, do not anger.

This is the first line of the Precepts which come to us through Usui Reiki. I have created my own version of these precepts and in my version, I say: “Just for today, I am free from anger.” By that, I don’t mean I will go through a day expecting to never be angry, although this is most certainly what Usui intended. The way I interpret being “free from anger” is that when a situation arises which might naturally illicit anger, I am free to let that flow through me, release it and not be controlled by it.

We are currently living in an environment across the world that is steeped in fear and fear brings anger. I remember as a child whenever I was hurt or in danger, my father’s first reaction was anger. This always confused me because I couldn’t imagine why I would be punished for being hurt and that’s what it felt like to me when he was angry. As a parent, when my children were young, I struggled to break this pattern. And recently I have discovered in myself that anger is what comes forth when I am faced with a situation in which I feel fearful. Based on my own experiences, it would seem that anger is a natural reaction to fear.

I’d like to suggest that the next time you find yourself angry and confused as to why you’re angry, look to see where the fear is hidden beneath. See if you can’t shift your fear to love. Many spiritual teachers have taught that Fear is the opposite of Love and when we can find a vibration of love, the fear will be eased and the anger can dissipate. Often, just identifying what has made us fearful is enough to pull us back into balance. If you need something more, here are a few suggestions:

One practice I have found helpful in releasing fear is a meditation taught by Taggart King in his Reiki I manual which I use with my beginning Reiki students. Here’s a description:

Sit with your back straight and hands relaxed in your lap, palms up.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply. As you breathe in, imagine white light
energy flooding your body and as you breathe out, let all tension release as
much as possible. After a few deep breaths, say silently to yourself:
“I now release all my anger.” Say this three times and then notice energy
releasing from the palms of your hands. After a while you will feel less and
less until you sense tht all anger has left. Take a few more deep breaths in
and out before opening your eyes.
Another thing that helps me free myself from anger is considering what I’m grateful for in that moment or my life in general. Gratitude is a high frequency and when it’s accessed has a way of drawing us out of anger and fear.
We’re bombarded daily with invitations to fear and anger. It takes its toll on our health. When we remain in a near constant state of unrest, our cortisol levels stay elevated and this can cause a plethora of weakened physical conditions. It would serve our bodies to find ways of coming back into balance as quickly and easily as possible. In these days where the emotional climate of the planet seems to mimic the sometimes violent and unpredictable  weather patterns of spring, I wish for you days of centered calm. If you need help with further ways of achieving this, it would be my honor to guide you.
Blessings & Light,

How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it.
